A Group for Women in Graduate School! Wednesdays from 3:30 pm to 5:00pm, beginning
January 27, 2010 through March 17, 2010. We will support each other through dialogue of the everyday
challenges of balancing school, work, life, family and friends and the complexities of gender, ethnicity,
and sexual identity in graduate school. We will reflect on personal stories, relationship patterns and
life stages. A variety of activities (journaling, guided visualization, art) will help us connect to the

Drs. Janice DeCosmo and Jennifer Harris, Undergraduate Academic Affairs

Now more than ever, undergraduates are taking on significant roles in research settings at the UW, and graduate students, as well as postdoctoral researchers, are often assuming primary responsibility for guiding these developing researchers.  In this workshop, Janice DeCosmo, Director of the University of Washington’s Undergraduate Research Program and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Academic Affairs, and Jennifer Harris, Associate Director of the UW Undergraduate Research Program, will discuss best practices for mentoring undergraduate researchers.  Come prepared to discuss ideas and troubleshoot challenges in this interactive workshop that will focus on communication of goals and expectations of mentees and mentors, elements of effective mentoring, and where to go for resources.

Ford and Osberg Fellowships, $25,000 for 2010-11

Two Ford Fellowships (each for $25,000) and one Osberg Fellowship (also $25,000) are available for award next year.

Attached is a letter from Mari Ostendorf opening up the nomination process.   Included is a description of the award requirements and a checklist that should be followed for all submitted nomination packets.  

Nominations are due by 4PM – April 2nd .

Recipient selection will be made by the CEP Committee around the end of April.

The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation is seeking student nominees from faculty members for its 2010-2011, $10,000 scholarship. Faculty should select an outstanding University of Washington undergraduate or graduate student in the science, technology, engineering,or math (STEM) disciplines.

Students must be highly motivated, focused on their scientific objectives, and possess intellectual daring. /

Graduate fellowships are being offered by Washington NASA Space Grant Consortium (WSGC). These fellowships are for support in Spring Quarter 2010 only. The application deadline is February 8, 2010.

WSGC offers research fellowships to current graduate students who are focused in the areas of science, technology, engineering or math. These fellowships provide tuition for Spring Quarter 2010 and a $5,000 award to UW graduate students who are primarily supported by teaching assistantships and have little or no funding to support research projects required for their master’s or doctoral thesis.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens and Washington state residents. Applicants must also be working as a UW teaching assistant at the time of application and meet in state tuition rate criteria.

Bonderman Travel Fellowship Info Sessions, 1/7 & 1/11

The annual Bonderman Travel Fellowship competition is upon us, and The Graduate School and UW Honors Program will be hosting information sessions for interested applicants.  They will be held on: 
      Thurs. Jan. 7, 2010, 12:30-2:30 pm, Mary Gates Hall 206  and
      Mon. Jan. 11, 2010, 4:30-6:30 pm, Mary Gates Hall 206.

This fellowship is an opportunity unique to the UW that you don’t want to miss.  There may never be another time in your life when you get paid to travel and explore your own interests.

Selected Bonderman Fellows will undertake international travel for eight or more months, to six or more countries in two or more major regions of the world.  Through solo travel the Fellows will focus on exploration and discovery, learning about the world and themselves in it.  Fellows may not conduct research, pursue an academic project, or participate in a formal program or organization. 

Up to seven graduate (and seven undergraduate) Bonderman Fellowships will be awarded in Spring 2010.  Each Fellowship carries a $20,000 award to be used only for extended international travel.  Fellows should plan to begin their travel between May 2010 and June 30, 2011.  Students who propose to travel beginning later than June 2011 should apply in the next round.
