MECHANICAL ENGINEERING SEMINAR

Tuesday, April 17, 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm

MEB 248

S. Balachandar

Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL

Interplay between turbulence and particles in environmental flows with primary focus on turbidity currents

The intensity and sustained propagation of a turbidity current depends on the interplay between suspended particles and turbulence. Suspended particles drive the flow and are the source of turbulence in a turbidity current, while the flow turbulence enables resuspension of particles from the bed. If resuspension dominates over deposition the intensity of the current can increase, thereby further increasing resuspension and resulting in a runaway current. But stable stratification due to suspended sediment concentration can damp and even kill turbulence. Then deposition dominates over resuspension and the current could laminarize resulting in massive deposits.

The UW Environmental Innovation Challenge was created to encourage multidisciplinary student teams to tackle some of our most pressing environmental problems and come up with working solutions that have an entrepreneurial application. This year teams from the University of Washington, and teams from other Washington and Oregon colleges and universities, have been working to define an environmental problem, design and develop a cleantech solution, and produce a working prototype or computer simulation.
Teams will present their concepts and demo their product/idea to a group of judges that includes technologists, entrepreneurs, and investors. The goal of the Challenge is to spark new product designs that capitalize on emerging markets and have the potential for impact. Even more importantly, the Challenge is pure fun—teams are motivated, dynamic, and passionate about their ideas.
